Point Blank: Poems by Alan King PDF, ePub eBook D0wnl0ad

"In Point Blank, we are given an intimate look at one man's inner and outer life, but there's no navel-gazing nonsense. There's always an awareness, implied or explicit, of the sociopolitical crucible. With language both tough-minded and celebratory, Alan King ignites the important details of his experience, compelling us to ask what-plus-what added up to our own lives." TIM SEIBLES, author of Fast Animal and One Turn Around the Sun

"Alan King is one of my favorite up-and-coming poets of his generation. His poems are not pop and flash, rather more like a slow dance with someone you're going to love forever. Here you will find poignant slices of life, so bright in a rough age of race killings and hate speech. He reminds us that what matters has always mattered." JOY HARJO, poet, musician, performer, and teacher

Translation Criticism- Potentials and Limitations: Categories and Criteria for Translation Quality Assessment

Translation Criticism- Potentials and Limitations: Categories and Criteria for Translation Quality Assessment by Katharina Reiss PDF, ePub eBook D0wnl0ad

Katharina Reiss's now classic contribution to Translation Studies, Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der Übersetzungskritik: Kategorien und Kriteren für eine sachgerechte Beurteilung von Übersetzungen, first appeared in 1971. This is the first English translation of this major work, allowing students and practitioners of translation in the English-speaking world to make more extensive use of Reiss's pioneering treatment of a central theme in translation: how to develop reliable criteria for the systematic evaluation of translations. Using a wealth of interesting and varied examples, Reiss offers a systematic and illuminating text typology, a pragmatic approach to text analysis, a functional perspective on translation and a hermeneutic view of the translator, thus accounting for some of the most important aspects of the translation process: the text (both source and target versions), the conditions which determine the translator's decisions, and the translator as an individual whose personal interpretation has to be respected by any critic.

In the three decades since Katharina Reiss wrote, the terminology of translation studies has evolved on many fronts. Erroll Rhodes' translation strikes an optimal balance between remaining faithful to the original presentation and using terminology that today's reader would generally understand and value.

British Soldiers of the Korean War: In Their Own Words by Stephen F. Kelly PDF, ePub eBook D0wnl0ad

More than 30,000 British troops fought in Korea between 1950 and 1953 and more than 3,000 died, with over 1,000 being captured and held in atrocious conditions by the Chinese or Koreans. At least half of those captured died in prison camps. More than 70 per cent of those who fought were 18-19 year olds doing national service. They were poorly trained and ill-equipped, fighting much of their time in snowy trenches. This book, for the first time, tells the story of these ordinary soldiers, as well as sailors and airmen, in their own words. It has the full backing of the British Korean Veterans Association, which has over 5,000 members. Most of the veterans are now in their eighties and this will be the last chance for them to tell their tale. So soon after the Second World War, this was a war Britain did not need but she remained steadfast by the side of the Americans, fighting in a hostile environment more than 6,000 miles away in a country nobody could point to on a map. The ‘Special Relationship’ may be a joke to some now – it wasn’t then.
